Join us for a deep-sea dive with Dr. Kim Juniper as he talks about deep sea thermal vents, proposed mining of these areas and what effect that will have on our oceans. Kate Moran will talk about the new marine projects and initiatives at Ocean Networks Canada.

TRANSIENT KILLER WHALES
Mark Malleson Whale Watcher

Mark has been observing whales as a skipper on a whalewatching boat for many years. He collects data for DFO and The Center for Whale Research and is an accomplished whale photographer, with a special interest in transient orcas. See his slideshow and hear about his observations on whales in our waters.

Join us, for our very popular, annual ocean safari where divers collect marine invertebrates and place them into tanks on the beach for up-close observation. See live sea creatures and learn about their lives. In cooperation with Parks Canada Day at East Point.

FOGO ISLAND | SATURNA ISLAND
Jane Wynne Retired Geologist

Jane worked for the Geological Survey of Canada for 30 years and was geologist-in-residence for 2 summers on Fogo Island. She will speak about the cod fishery on Fogo and the story of the Fisherman’s Co-op, about the geology of the island, the philanthropic business model of Zita Cobb, the Fogo Island Inn and some of the parallels with Saturna Island.

Dr. Jim Darling Whale Researcher, Tofino & MauiJim has led research projects on whales for over 25 years, specializing in grey and humpback whales of the North East Paci c. His book, Humpbacks—Unveiling the Mysteries, is a must-read for anyone interested in these fascinating animals. Jim’s talk will focus on humpback song and vocalization.
