AILEEN JEFFRIES

Senior Research Scientist, Pacific Biodiversity Institute

One of the common species of cetaceans seen in the Salish Sea is the Harbour porpoise, yet very little is known about these marine mammals. Aileen Jeffries is trying to change that. She has been researching Harbour porpoise in our region in an effort to understand their behaviour, movements and distribution. She has installed a high frequency hydrophone in Narvaez Bay, a suspected porpoise nursery. Hear all about Aileen’s ground-breaking research, including her latest findings.

Aileen has enjoyed a 40 year career as a research scientist. Her current interests focus on the acoustics, behavior and conservation of cetacean species. Aileen is a Board Member of the Pacific Biodiversity Institute in Winthrop, Washington.

Also hear the latest news from the BC Cetacean Sightings Network from Bailey Eagan, research analyst, Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Research Lab.
