Join our dedicated Saturna bird enthusi- asts, and help cover the entire island. If you’d like to participate but don’t know the species, we’ll pair you with someone who really knows their birds. Have questions? Ask one of our experienced counters: Harvey and Pam Janszen, Allen and Ilka Olsen, Bob Bruce, Sam Peramaki and Priscilla Ewbank.
Often the most telling counts are around bird feeders. If you have a feeder, please sign up, spend an hour or more counting the birds that show up, fill out our counting form and submit it. It’s that easy. Not sure of the species names? You can easily find them in the book, Birds of Coastal BC, or with an on-line bird ID app. Really... it’s easier than you think and we’re happy to help.
We are part of the Southern Gulf Islands count of the national Audubon Christmas Bird Count which establishes trends in bird populations. Our count data helps identify changes in species and is probably more important now than ever as we observe climate change effects. Without this citizen science, many species at risk would not be identified and protected.
